There's a new table tennis coach in town, but not just any coach. Macaroni Kid South Birmingham got the chance to interview BumperNets' new head coach, Keith Evans. Originally from Jamaica, Evans is a two time National Champion and former Olympic coach to the Jamaican team.

Coach Evans recently moved to the Birmingham area to take up a full time coaching position at BumperNets, a table tennis store that has been key in building the sport's popularity in the area. For the past fifteen years before moving here, Evans coached the Texas Wesleyan University's collegiate team, a leader in college table tennis.  Dominating the sport, Texas Wesleyan won the national championship for twelve out of thirteen years, during Evans tenure.

But he's also familiar with recreational students, and finds joy in teaching students who have never played before. In fact, he would love to see the sport grow in popularity in Birmingham.  "My goal is to get more kids playing, and develop the sport to a higher level in Birmingham," said Evans.

"My goal is to get more kids playing, and develop the sport to a higher level in Birmingham," said Evans.

There is a great opportunity for kids who excel with Coach Evans guiding their skills. Competitions are held all over the United States and even the world. Coach Evans has traveled to an impressive number of countries, including Canada, South Africa, Sweden, Columbia, Paraguay and even New Caledonia, during his table tennis career.

Coach Evans is also involved as a national coach for the U.S. Paralympic table tennis athletes. Two of the U.S. Paralympic table tennis team athletes just qualified for the 2018 World Para Table Tennis Championships in Slovenia.

Most of the kids Evans currently coaches are between the ages of 12 and 18.  But, he said age six is a great time to start, and some focused younger kids could play as well. One surprising fact we learned from Coach Evans is that there are athletes as old age 90 still competing in the US Open for table tennis!

All ages? All abilities? U.S. and world travel opportunities? Sounds like fun to me!
