Springtime Struggles

Expert Advice from OrthoExpress in Chelsea, Alabama

April 28, 2020

Just as soon as Spring hits, so does the onset of a lot of illness and injury. The warmer weather brings out the best and the worst in all of us. Springtime leaves many struggling with seasonal allergies. It leaves parents wondering what to do with their kids, and for those that enjoy the outdoors, we struggle with how to make the most of our time in order to enjoy the warm sunshine.

AVOIDING ALLERGIES & SPRING FEVERS

As an orthopedic urgent care, we diagnose and treat many spring activity accidents and sports injury aches, pains, and ankle sprains, but we don’t treat the common colds, seasonal allergies, and actual spring fevers.

It is important for our patients to understand what we cannot treat illnesses so that they know where to go for proper care. Illnesses related to seasonal allergies, sinus infections, or the common cold and flu cannot be treated at OrthoExpress Urgent Care.

Our orthopedic urgent care clinic is set up to treat orthopedic related injuries. OrthoExpress Urgent Care will treat orthopedic injuries, musculoskeletal disease, and joint pain, but we don’t treat spring fevers.

During the Spring, we spend more time outside in the evening and weekends, and unfortunately, our increase in outdoor activity also comes with an increase in orthopedic injury.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • More than 2.6 million children are treated in emergency rooms for sports and recreation-related injuries (annually).[1]
  • More than 200,000 kids (14 and younger) are treated for playground-related injuries (annually).[2]

Why would you wait when you can walk in and immediately be seen by an orthopedic specialist when an orthopedic injury occurs?

Living south of Birmingham, Alabama, Shelby County, Talladega County, and Coosa County residents find it extremely difficult to drive through Highway 280 traffic to get to the local hospital ER when injuries happen after school, after work, or in the evenings. You can avoid traffic congestion. You can avoid waiting in pain for the next available appointment the next business day and avoid the wait in the local ER for hours to evaluate the injury.

SPRING FEVER FIX

Watch your step.

Warmer temperatures can lead to a spring in your step and a sprain to an ankle.

You’ve probably been sitting most of the winter working at the computer, studying, or in class. As the season changes and the temperatures rise, people catch a case of spring fever and tend to take the opportunity to get outside to enjoy the warm weather by doing a variety of fun activities like running, gardening, biking, playing volleyball, camping and hiking, and more.

An ankle sprain is the most common ankle injury. A sprain is a stretching injury to the ligaments connecting the ankle bones. Ankle injuries can debilitate movement, create significant amounts of pain, and seriously impact your daily life.

Let’s face it when the sun comes out, we want to do everything outside! With the warmer weather and eventual transition into summer comes the risk of injuries through spring sports and outdoor activities.

If the spring in your step gets sprained, OrthoExpress can help.

To quickly diagnose and resolve an ankle sprain, or any orthopedic injury, contact OrthoExpress today. We provide comprehensive diagnostic services and can help repair your ankle injury.

OrthoExpress offers a less expensive and less stressful alternative to the Emergency Room (ER) or orthopedic clinics with a more efficient and affordable mindset. Avoiding the ER or an orthopedic clinic can lead to missing such things as extended waiting times, exposure to other patient illness, and the referral runaround to receive specialty care.

OrthoExpress patients are usually seen and treated by an orthopedic specialized provider within 60 minutes including x-rays and are accepted on a walk-in basis with NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED.

The staff at OrthoExpress Urgent Care are trained as orthopedic specialists and provide treatments for:
