How to Make "Vibleck" - Coronavirus Oobleck with Pantry Ingredients

Easy at home science lesson kids can do all by themselves

By Jess Searcy March 24, 2020

Need something to keep your kids occupied for an hour or more? Something they can make all by themselves with ingredients you probably have in your pantry already? In this article, our Macaroni Kids show you how to make what they've dubbed "Vibleck," otherwise known us Virus Oobleck! Warning: it IS messy, but washes off easily. Food coloring may stain clothes and skin, so consider leaving that ingredient out if you have younger kids or would like less mess.

At-Home Science Experiment

You can do this activity just for fun, or turn it into your science for the day! Oobleck is a substance known as a "Non-Newtonian Fluid," which means it has properties of both a solid and liquid. Here is a great video from Crash Course Kids that explains what a Non-Newtonian Fluid is and how it works. Search "oobleck" on Youtube for even more videos and ideas on what to do with your Vibleck. This is also a great project for introducing states of matter: solids, liquids and gases.

Ingredients

  • cornstarch
  • food coloring (optional)
  • water

Directions

  1. Empty a container of cornstarch into a large bowl or container.
  2. Add a little bit of water at a time until you get a substance that has the consistency of slime. Experiment with adding more or less water.
  3. Add food coloring if you would like.
  4. Experiment with your creation. Punch it, hammer it, squish it, ball it up, step in it, etc.
