Last week, I was tasked with teaching our co-op kids why we have Leap Year, that weird extra day in February every four years. It was a lot harder to explain than I thought it would be. If you don't know why, yet, there's an article in this week's newsletter that explains it all! Besides learning about Leap Year, I also wanted to do some sort of activity with the lesson but all I could find were silly frog crafts (leap year, get it? yeah... me neither). Finally, my friend came up with the brilliant idea of having the kids write a letter to their future selves! It was brilliant, and some of the kids got really into writing and decorating their envelopes. Talk about a good way to get kids to practice writing! And how fun is it that four years from now, they'll get to open it up and see a little snapshot of themselves from the past. I had the terrifying realization that next Leap Year, I will have TWO TEENAGERS! If you decide to do this with your kids, just be sure to make a note on your calendar to open the letter AND where you put it! I knew I had to do this or we would never see the letters again! For more ideas on how to celebrate, read the Leap Year article.
Changing subjects, this past Sunday, we went on a field trip to the Southern Environmental Center and the Geodome at Birmingham Southern. If you have never been, check out our pictures on Instagram and visit their website. It is really worth visiting. It could not have come at a better time for our family. I'm having an existential crisis over the fact that Alabaster has no recycling services and so to alleviate some of my anxiety over it, I am trying to learn ways to reduce our trash impact. I know my kids are watching closely. We learned so much from our guide at the SEC and the Geodome films about Alabama will really make you want to protect the environment close to home! Definitely go check it out!
Our wonderful guide teaches us about how trash production per individual has increased from about two pounds per day in the 70s to over six pounds per day in the 2000s! |
