Expert Advice from OrthoExpress in Chelsea, Alabama

February 18, 2020

The orthopedic specialists at OrthoExpress Urgent Care will ONLY treat orthopedic injuries. We are not love doctors, but since it’s the month of Valentine's Day, we thought we should share some of the most common injuries that truly cause you to go “weak in the knees” represented by L. O. V. E.

L – Ligament Injuries such as the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL), or Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL)

O – Overuse or Osgood-Schlatter Disease

V – Varus (Bowlegged) and Valgus (Knock-kneed) related Osteoarthritis

E – Event-related trauma

The emotional reference to “getting weak in the knees” is temporary. However, the physical effects displayed from the four common causes of knee joint weakness outlined above as L. O. V. E. are not the only conditions that cause you to get “weak in the knees.” Additional causes of unstable knees include:

  • Arthritis
  • Illness – Fatigue, Hunger, Dehydration, Blood sugar levels, etc.
  • Injuries
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Nerve damage
  • Overuse
  • Strains and sprains
  • Torn cartilage and/or ligament

OrthoExpress encourages you to seek an orthopedic specialist as soon as possible for an evaluation.

FEELING WEAK IN THE KNEES?

Knee weakness can range from a mild annoyance to a serious health concern. Weakness in the knee, commonly paired with knee pain, is one major symptom of an acute knee injury.

The severity of knee pain and exact location of knee pain may vary depending on the injury.

If you experience joint instability and/or knee pain, you’ll want to take action quickly in order to

  • Gain an accurate diagnosis,
  • Begin treatment and/or therapy to strengthen your weak knee joints,
  • Adjust activity in order to avoid further joint damage.

If you are experiencing weak knees, please use extra caution when walking up or downstairs in order to prevent falls and further injury.

We often don’t think about how much we move our knee joints in a day but when we are experiencing knee pain, we become more aware of how much we are moving.

While it’s easy to brush off a little bit of discomfort or tell yourself it’ll get better with time, rest, and a little ice, it is important that you do not ignore the symptoms if you are experiencing sudden knee problems. In addition to knee pain, common symptoms that accompany weaken knee joints include:

  • Swelling and stiffness of the knee
  • Difficulty transitioning from a sitting to a standing position
  • Instability when bearing weight on an individual joint
  • Popping or grinding noise when the joint is bent or in motion
  • Knee “locking up” or difficulty with bending and straightening
  • Redness or a burning sensation

ORTHOEXPRESS CAN DIAGNOSE YOUR KNEE PAIN AND INJURY

Whether accompanied by pain or constant worry that your knee will buckle, affecting the way you live and walk, that fear of falling and worry is a real concern. It’s a debilitating problem, especially for seniors.

In some cases, simple low impact and passive exercises can help to relieve knee pain and strengthen the muscles that support your knee joints. Depending on what is causing you to become weak in the knees, treatment could range from anti-inflammatory prescriptions to a knee brace and injection therapy or physical therapy, to surgery.
