We totally get it. Book clubs can be more stressful than fun. Sometimes you are “forced” to read something that simply doesn’t interest you. You may not have as much free time as other members and feel self-conscious or anxious if you haven’t finished the book. Maybe there are self-satisfied “speed reader” members that annoy you with their gloating. If you’ve ever found yourself joining and eventually falling out of a book club for any of these reasons, Pelham Public Library is excited to invite you to a new kind of book club: the Silent Book Club of Pelham! What makes the Silent Book Club so different? Everything except the reading. We have only one rule: bring a book and read it. Pressure Free. The Silent Book Club has no mandatory book selections, no “book reports,” and no forced socializing. There may be speed readers, but without required reading they won’t have any reason to brag!
The Silent Book Club of Pelham welcomes you to bring whatever you are reading and read with us in silence. It’s the perfect way to give yourself a break from the world for an hour. On the second Thursday of each month, we will be meeting at 5:45 PM at the library in Pelham for a little silent reading. For the first 15 minutes, members are welcome to introduce themselves, share their current book selection, or simply sit down and start reading. At 6 PM, we will cease all the small talk and read quietly for an hour. It’s that simple.
The Silent Book Club is hosted by two librarians from Pelham Public Library, and both are voracious readers. Although they will not force their opinions on you (no pressure), both librarians are loaded with reading suggestions if you want them. Interested readers are invited to follow us on Goodreads or just show up at our next meeting. For more information on where this idea came from, check out https://silentbook.club/.
