The Mac Kids Go to Art Camp at The Art Studio - Mac Kid APPROVED!

Formerly The Art Studio of Calera - now located in Montevallo!

By Jess Searcy April 23, 2019

"Can we do art camp for Spring break again next year?" says Cole on his last day of art camp at The Art Studio. Music to my ears after a successful week of creativity and messy art fun for my two boys (ages 8 and 10). After seeing Evan and Cole's creations from the week, I think I want to do art camp again next year too (and I mean for me... can I?). Yes, I'm just a tad bit jealous of all the fun things they got to do, which they excitedly show me on the last day of camp. Everything from shaving cream prints, to fluffy slime, to painting, to the creation of three dimensional doughnut sculptures. Yes. I said doughnut sculptures. How brilliant is that?

The guys showing off some of their favorite creations from their week at  The Art Studio Art Camp.

One day at pickup, Cole shows me his fluffy slime, "I didn't know this was ART Mom!" Translation? "Art is even more fun that I thought Mom!" Making big messes, while creating something they can be proud to put on display for friends and family, is the key to their hearts, I know. Yet I'm often reluctant to say YES to the MESS. So it is easy to be thankful for art camp, where they can create all kinds of artistic mess, while not in my house. Win-win for everyone!

One happy kiddo with a handful of fluffy slime he made himself during art camp.

While Cole is showing me his fluffly slime, Evan is still intently focused on his work, making shaving cream prints. Though it is time for camp to be over for the day, he has no intention of wrapping up quickly. With two screen addicted kids, often rushing through projects in order to be "done" so they can go play video games, this is a remarkable occasion! Evan is so creative. I LOVE seeing him serious about doing real art. I'm also pleased that Alison Baggett (owner and camp director) isn't rushing anyone out the door either. It is easy to see that she is doing work she loves, being more concerned that the kids are satisfied with their work, than finished on time. It was nice and relaxed. I totally felt comfortable strolling in at the end of the day to peek in on what the kids were doing.

This isn't our first rodeo with The Art Studio. I had already gotten the chance to experience creating art with Alison, when some friends and I got together for a painting and wine party. Alison helped us create adorable door hangers for the holidays (read about that HERE). I'd been itching to get the guys into her classes ever since. Now that we are homeschooling, I saw the perfect opportunity to keep them learning through spring break with art camp. They got a break from teacher Mom, and didn't ever realize I was counting these days as school! Worked out perfectly for me!

Check out some of their fabulous creations! Evan's are on the left, Cole's on the right.

Watercolor and oil pastel resist of owls.

Cherry tree paintings made by blowing the paint around with straws.

Chalk on black paper.

Multimedia self portraits.
