Pelham Library Receives Fiction Materials Grant

March 5, 2019

The Pelham Public Library is pleased to announce that a materials grant was received from the Alabama Public Library Service.

In 2019, the library received a $10,000 grant to purchase fiction materials. With the grant, Pelham Public Library seeks to update and strengthen the fiction collections for all age groups. The grant will assist in accomplishing an ongoing goal of the Five-Year Plan: "To provide a well-rounded collection of materials including print and non-print to meet the needs of the residents of the City of Pelham."

In the spring of 2018, the Pelham Public Library moved into a 50% larger facility and now has space to expand the fiction collection in both general and genre-specific collections. In recent years, growth of the fiction collections has been stifled due to a lack of space within the Pelham Public Library facility. As a result, the development of collections targeting specific groups has suffered. With the increase of physical space and the assistance of a collection development grant, this weakness can be remedied. For instance, efforts to create a more fully-developed fiction collection include an increase in literary works, award winners, and classics, all of which have a large and neglected audience of pleasure readers. Much of this material is relevant to community conversations on a wide range of subjects, everything from North Korea to sexual identity, in a way that mainstream popular fiction like James Patterson and Danielle Steel is not. Availability of this material will improve the reader's ability to knowledgeably participate in community conversations and foster the discovery of new perspectives. Furthermore, the increase in space will allow the library collection to expand beyond the New York Times Bestseller list into what every pleasure reader wants: more genre fiction written by a diverse cast of authors with a variety of perspectives and writing styles. Such variety will undoubtedly energize the library patrons, which will increase both pleasure reading as a service and library circulation.

Lots of new materials for children are also now available, including board books and beginning reader materials. The Pelham Public Library encourages residents of all ages to visit often to make use of these exciting new library materials.
