So many things to do with kids at Cheaha State Park, just a smidge over an hour's drive from Birmingham, Alabama. We are always looking for new state parks to meet up and explore with our camping friends from Atlanta, and Cheaha State Park was the perfect in-between spot. It features the highest point in Alabama and lots of family fun.
There are lots of things to do in the park, but here's what we did during our stay over Labor Day Weekend.

Camping
We stayed in the semi-primitive campground, within walking distance of the viewing tower located directly on top of the highest point in Alabama. The campground had an old-school, vintage playground surrounded by fabulous rocks for climbing and exploring. Some of the campsites were not as level as we would have liked, so get there early to secure the best ones. There are other campgrounds in the park as well.

Swimming
The park features an awesome swimming lake with a sandy shore and jumping platform. Loads of fun and perfect for a relaxing day of picnicking.

Hiking
Lots of beautiful hiking trails here, both within the park, and just outside in the National Forest surrounding the state park. We tried out a waterfall hike hoping to swim in the water hole below the falls, but it was a bit too dry when we went. Be sure to visit the viewing tower at the top of the mountain and Bald Rock, not really for the hiking, but for the great views.

Ranger Programs
We loved Ranger Mandy's reptile talk, within walking distance of the semi-primitive campground and viewing tower. She brought a live snake and turtle for us to meet, as well as some reptilian artifacts. Get a current schedule of ranger programs for your visit at the park store and visitors center, near the entrance.

Gem Mining
Near the park store is a gem mining flume, where kids can add to their rock and gemstone collections. It is a bit pricey, but if you consider it a donation to the park, it's not so bad, and the kids just LOVE it.

Native American Artifacts Museum
A small octagonal building near the park store houses a wonderful collection of Native American artifacts, including hundreds of arrow heads and spear points. The kids enjoyed trying on the feathered head dresses and banging on a drum.
