Make a Countdown Chain

By Melinda Larke - Cherry Valley Macaroni Kid Publisher August 15, 2017

Do you have an exciting event coming up that you want to find a fun way to countdown to? A vacation, relative coming to visit, a holiday, a birthday, school starting (only exciting for some I guess), school ending? Making a countdown chain is a fun and easy way to countdown to that special day.

What you will need:
Several different colors of construction paper
Scissors or paper cutter (paper cutter makes things go a lot faster)
Stapler
Decorations (stickers, pens, stamps, etc.) if you want to decorate your rings when you are finished

What you will do:
1. Find out how many days there are until your special event.
2. Decide if/what kind of color pattern you want and how many rings of each color you will need.
3. Cut your paper into strips lengthwise.
4. Form the first strip of paper into a circle and staple it. Take the next color in your pattern and loop into the first circle, form into a circle and staple it. Your two rings should now be connected. Keep going this way until all of the strips of paper are used.
5. If desired, decorate your rings.
6. Each day one ring gets pulled off

**Extra activities:
1. Add activities inside each ring to do each day until the big day arrives.
2. For younger kids who are still learning their letters or numbers, put the letter and/or numbers on the rings and have them say them while they tear off the ring for the day. Also, show them the letter and/or number before and after so they can learn the sequence.
