Suit up in survival gear and transport yourself to another planet. That is what it’s like to go SCUBA diving. You wear life support gear, experience weightlessness, and encounter alien creatures. Does this sound like the adventure of a lifetime? You and your family can take this trip right here in the suburbs of Birmingham! Become a certified SCUBA diver with Family Dive Club this summer.
Adventure is only part of the equation. At SCUBA camp, your child will learn important life skills. For example, removing and replacing your mask underwater is one of the more intimidating skills required to complete the Open Water Scuba course. Students learn to remain calm and breath normally, despite the fact there is water on their face surrounding their nose. The confidence gained when a student succeeds follows them back to dry land.
Things don’t always go perfectly while learning SCUBA skills. Sometimes students put their mask back on upside down, finding it difficult to clear the water. We don’t panic. Patient instructors teach students to STOP, THINK, BREATH and then ACT. They are taught to calmly remove the mask again, turn it around and slowly clear the water from the mask by looking up and blowing out their nose. The self-confidence students earn with this one simple yet intimidating skill is immeasurable.
Once out of the water, our skilled and seasoned Experiential Educators help students reflect on these powerful experiences and translate their learning to real life situations that are also scary and intimidating. After SCUBA camp, raising your hand in math class or saying no to peer pressure is easy!
Sign your teen up for camp this summer
Family Dive Club offers an enriching, safe, affordable, adventurous and unique opportunity for your teens, aged 12-17. Throughout our one week Scuba Camp, our campers will have fun, make new friends, and have the opportunity to satisfy all the requirements needed to earn a PADI Open Water Scuba Certification. This certification allows them to dive anywhere in the world for the rest of their lives.
We have 3 Scuba Camps scheduled this summer:
Session I – June 19th - 23rd
Session II – June 26th - 30th
Session III – July 10th - 14th (Session III takes place the first part of the week at the LJCC and on Montclair Rd. and finishes at Blue Water Scuba Park the last two days of camp)
Our camps take place at the Blue Water Scuba Park, a beautiful, spring fed quarry in Pelham, Alabama. Although some adults may remember this as a wild place to hang out in high school, it is now a beautiful dive training facility, open only to the public for dive training needs.
Family SCUBA certification opportunities
What do you do if you want to learn to dive with your children? We have a weekend course for families scheduled for July 8th - 9th and July 15th - 16th. At Family Dive Club, it’s not just about the diving. Our mission is to provide opportunities for teens to get off their devices, dive into nature and get more connected to friends and family. We use SCUBA diving to teach kids leadership and important life skills, helping them thrive in the modern world. Through applied skills, our campers learn organization, focus, awareness, safety, communication, self-confidence, decision making and responsibility. They learn to engage with others and with the world around them.
